Scenario #6 - The End of the World

As we know it
120 min video
2 Apr 2020

This event was streamed live on our website, Facebook and Youtube on April 2nd, 2020

We have been living in the Anthropocene since the Industrial Revolution. It is a geological demarcation of the time in which mankind rules the Earth. We learned to dominate natural processes, and we deem ourselves superior to nature and the planet. We contribute to the change in the atmosphere and, so doing, we form an influencing factor in our planet’s future.

How do we view the future? What does the Post-Anthropocene look like? What happens if we seize being the leading factor of our surroundings, and we free ourselves from a philosophical superiority?

‘The end of the world is,’ in the words of Timothy Morton, ‘the end of the idea that humans are the only people who have a world on this planet’. This notion presents quite a challenge for us, and it might be impossible to fully grasp this universality. We will never know what it feels like to be a tangerine, a Mars rover, or a mouse. What we can do is think about other ways of coexisting, and where we stand in relation to non-humans.

At STRP Scenario #6, we will try to see ourselves in both an ‘other,’ and a ‘something’. We will not focus on dystopias and utopias, but we will use imagination, visualization, and vulnerability to explore the common connections between humans, objects, living creatures, atoms, and molecules. What does it mean to be a human, a plant or a planet?

Rocio Berenguer

Artist Rocio Berenguer finds inspiration in the dramaturgy of the body and the major challenges and changes of our contemporary world. From the evolution of spaces of individual freedom within our society to questioning ecology; her transdisciplinary creations are forward-looking fictions, exploring the possibility of “another tomorrow”.Following her desire to integrate new technologies in poetic writing, Rocio questions how the new media and mechanics that are omnipresent in our daily lives, modify our interpersonal relationships, with ‘the body’ as point of convergence and territory, ready to be reclaimed.

Yolande Zola Zoli van der Heide & Suzanne Dhaliwal

Yolande Zola Zoli van der Heide is the new exhibitions curator at Van Abbemuseum. Her interests lie in diverse intersecting perspectives – institutional, trans-local, feminist, queer, intersectional, and modes that decentre the oppressor in practices of freedom and liberation – to influence art institutional practices. During STRP Scenario, van der Heide questions the role of art and art institutions in relation to a world in crisis. What role does imagination play in this?
Together with climate justice creative and media consultant Suzanne Dhaliwal, she will present a climate justice code for artists and art institutions, drafted by the editors and steering group of the second Assembly for commoning art institutions. This code calls for artists and art institutions to employ the power of imagination where climate crisis is concerned. What practical measures can the artworld make to take care of our planetary commons?
