In 1962 vroeg Philips aan de  geluidspioneer Tom Dissvelt om een LP met  elektronische muziek te componeren. Dit LP-project was getiteld ‘Checkpoints’ en beschreef een reis om de wereld. De veertien korte stukken hadden titels als Mexico, Afrika, Pacific en Australia. Met het succes van Dick Raaijmakers’ ‘Song of the Second Moon’ in gedachten, wilde Philips echter een album dat appelleerde aan de toenmalige ‘space craze’. Bij de release in 1964 werd Tom Dissevelts album dan ook omgedoopt tot ‘Fantasy in Orbit’.

Inmiddels is Fantasy in Orbit een bekend werk in de elektronische muziek. Het geeft een prachtige weergave van de imaginaire reis die een astronaut maakt rondom de aarde. Op de originele hoes van de LP uit 1964 staat te lezen:

“The ‘message’ in this music is, therefore, simply this: that man in orbit never loses contact with the Earth, not for a single moment. At lift-off and over the deep waters of the oceans, over barely accessible jungles and forests, over cities of which he can see only a dim glow, over the heads of millions and millions of fellow creatures – man as well as animals – he feels that the Earth is permanently calling him. The colors of those feelings may differ from time-zone to time-zone, from continent tot continent, from coast to coast. Each region exerts its own pull. But every vibration of it ties him to the Earth below. “

De componist Kees Tazelaar en de filmmakers Henk Lamers en Jeanne de Bont hebben een hedendaagse versie gemaakt van Tom Dissevelts Fantasy in Orbit. Met behulp van de originele tapes zijn alle tracks door Kees Tazelaar omgezet van mono naar Dolby Surround 5.0. – een minutieus karwei.  Maar met resultaat: samen met de veertien animatiefilms van Henk Lamers en Jeanne de Bont wordt de imaginaire reis om de wereld op indrukwekkende wijze herleefd.

Fantasy in Orbit draait op zaterdag 4 april in STRP+ van 22.00u tot 22.45u, en wordt voorafgegaan door een introductie van Kees Tazelaar.
