STRP @ BUG 13
Music video compilation programme seen at BFI Southbank (London) 22-May-2009 curated by UK-based BUG: BUG sets out to explore the range of creativity in music video today - from exciting work in mainstream videos, to off-beam DIY experimentation by 'bedroom' directors made possible by off-the-shelf technology. STRP selected the best videos for you...
BUG 13 kicked off with a preview from We got time by David Wilson, a beautiful in-camera animation made for Scottish singer-songwriter Moray McLaren which reminded me of Notebook, an artwork made by Evelien Lohbeck, presented at STRP 2009. Next was Shoes by Tiga, a humorous TV effect video including a naked green drummer made by Alex Large and Lianne Sommers, a British directing duo who found some old 70s cams and knew how to work them.
Human vulnerability versus cold cityscape is portrayed in Lessons Learned from Matt & Kim, shot by LA-based filmmakers Taylor Cohen an Otto Arsenault at Times Square, New York. Alanis’ naked appearance in a music video is definitely beaten with this one.
Wether you’re a rockfan or not: just imagine a western with bandmembers turning into bankrobbing outlaws with their lives on the line, and you’ve got the new video Fire from British rockband Kasabian brilliantly shot by W.I.Z.. W.I.Z. is part of Factory Films and made music videos for the Chemical Brothers (Out of control), Clinic (Tomorrow) and many others. Definitely one to check out full screen.
BUG 13 also featured the mind-blowing new single from The Prodigy, Warrior’s Dance. The accompanying video made by Corin Hardy is an extremely complicated stop motion and puppetry short which shows a tribal gathering from figures made out of sigarette packet men. Hardy sets fire on current music video’s and stretches the limit of what filmmakers are capable off today. The firestarters are back!
The 13th episode of BUG was curated by David Knight and Phil Tidy, and hosted by Adam Buxton.
